INSTRUCTION 6010 Opening Exercises Pledge
to the Flag The morning opening exercises will include the Pledge of Allegiance. Those students who have made the personal decision not to recite the "Pledge" may be excused from participating. In addition, the Board of Education shall provide, at the start of each day, a period of silence. Students and teachers may observe such time in silent meditation. The Flag of the United States of America shall be raised above each school during all school sessions, weather permitting. The United States Flag shall be displayed in each classroom each day school is in session. to the Flag Time shall be provided daily, preferably during the morning opening exercises, to provide the opportunity for students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Permissive language rather than mandatory language shall be used to introduce the recitation of the Pledge, such as, "You are invited to participate in the recitation of the Pledge." Participation in the recitation of the Pledge is voluntary. If, because of some personal philosophy, a student has made the personal, serious decision not to salute the Flag or stand for the "Star Spangled Banner," her/she may choose to remain seated and silent. Students may wish to use this time to reflect on a loved one or a personal philosophy. In any event, all students must be courteous and respectful of others. In addition, at the beginning of each school day the administration shall provide for students and teachers the opportunity to observe an appropriate period of time for silent meditation.
