Policy on Physical Education at Manchester High School

The Board of Education believes that physical education is an integral part of a high school student's education. It provides a break from the academic schedule for physical activity and gives students a chance to meet and work cooperatively with other students as well as to develop physical skills to be used not only in youth but to carry over into adult life.

The Board of Education also believes that the curriculum should provide as many options and alternatives for students as possible. To meet its objectives for the physical education program at the High School, the Board adopts the following policies.

1.) Requirement

All students are required to elect Physical Education each quarter and must accumulate 1.0 credits as a requirement for graduation unless excused by a doctor. When excused from physical education by a doctor, a student will be required to meet the total number of units required for graduation by selecting an elective in lieu of physical education.

2.) Marking

Pass/Fail mark will be issued on a quarterly basis. Attendance, preparation for class, and active participation in class will serve as a basis for determining a passing mark.

3.) Athletic Credit

All students and athletes must take a sophomore year core program. Varsity and Junior Varsity athletes, both boys and girls, have the option of being excused from Physical Education during their sport season in their junior and senior years. Sophomore athletes have the option of being excused the day of a contest.

4.) Curriculum

There will be curriculum changes to include elective courses in the 12th grade and broaden the existing core programs in the 10th and 11th grades.

5.) Length of Periods

Double period physical education classes will be scheduled depending upon the number of student selections and the total master schedule of the entire school.
